James' Marathon Plan

In a mad moment, in April 2005, at the end of my first Journey Intensive, I made a commitment to run a marathon in 2006, in aid of the Journey Outreach Program.

Currently (18th September 2005), the plan looks like this:

My thanks to Kenny McMillan of ImpactSoft for offering to make me the facility to take charity payments online. Watch this space!

Contact Kenny if you would like him to work on your web site! (Don't blame Kenny for Co-MET! That's all mine!!)

My thanks also to Natalie Gotts of Nutritional-Thinking for offering to be my sports nutritionist. If you want to see what Natalie could do for you, check out her website.

Susan and I are now (21st June) (both!) officially enrolled in:

Thruxton 10K race, Sunday 17th July. It’s here if you want to come and cheer. We’re going to a Hash BBQ in Ludgershall afterwards! We did it in BAKING heat. We finished, we weren't last, and we weren't injured (and James ran 9 miles the following day, on schedule!) See the press release here.

New Forest Half Marathon, Sunday 18th September. It starts here and ends here. It seems strangely prescient that it should end in the Cemetery Sports Centre! It seems likely that Susan and I will take around 3.5 to 4 hours; it starts at 11:00am; we should be back by 3pm. Time for a leisurely picnic in the NewF while we’re sweating our way around! (we did it in 2:57, which delighted us!)

Clarendon Way Half Marathon, Sunday October 2nd. 12:00. Starts at Broughton and ends in Salisbury. Being one-way, this is one where we’d really appreciate some support. The absolute best for us would be if we could get a lift to Broughton, be cheered in Salisbury, and given a lift from Salisbury back to wherever our car is! The Clarendon Way is MUCH tougher than the NewF, so we’ll probably take at least four hours to do it. This is probably not a picnic day! The Clarendon is famous for having seriously bad weather EVERY year! But there’s plenty of time for a leisurely pub lunch somewhere between Broughton and Salisbury, I should think!

Walt Disney World Full Marathon, January 8th 2006 at 6:00am!!! If you’d like to come, it’s here: I’m afraid you get to pay for your own air fare!

We haven’t yet registered for the Cape Town Half Marathon … we thought we’d get a few more miles under our belts first! I've currently (22/6) done 173 miles on the training plan; see the details for the details.

This all to support:

This web page is here to record my progress, and to appeal for help in this project. I need help (at least) in these areas:

  • Physical training and coaching
  • Nutrition and weight loss
  • Sports injury (and sports health!)
  • Psychology of sport (and Journey Processes)
  • Publicity
  • Administration
  • Fund raising
  • Travel planning

I want publicity for the charities, and the work they do. I also want publicity for the programme itself, to show what an overweight (I was 70lbs--32Kg overweight at the start of this programme), redundant (I was made redundant, with no notice whatsoever, last November), 57 year old man, who has never been really fit in his life, and who was walking with a stick due to bad knees just two months ago, can do!

If I can do it, anyone can do it!

Here are some other links that are relevant:

  • MBTsThe greatest trainers in the world, MBTs (Masai Barefoot Technology). I've just discovered them (bought two pairs, sandals and trainers, at the Festival of Mind, Body, Spirit. Susan bought a pair too, and so did two of my friends at the show. This weekend I discovered that even the Buddha wears MBTs!).
  • My Vision for this Program, as I outlined it in a letter to the Journey organisation in April 2005.
  • My current training progress (Excel spreadsheet).

I'm beginning to find people to help me (thanks for phoning this morning Karen!) ... and lots more help is needed! So, if you would like to help with any or all of the areas mentioned above, please get in touch!

I'm particularly keen to make a good story for this, and to get support from Gillian McKeith (it's mainly her program I'm using for nutrition) -- it's a great story for her, today I heard from Celador (the makers of the You Are What You Eat TV programme)... so I may get to be on there!

So let me know if you have any other good ideas.

I'm also interested in people joining me ... are you daft enough?

Google's AdSense, crawls web pages, and works out what sort of adverts readers would be interested in. Here's what it makes of all this ...

(Click to see what the advertiser has on offer ... I make (miniscule) amounts of money every time some clicks the link, even if you don't buy anything!!
It goes without saying that I don't endorse any of these ads!)
